2010 marks the 15th year anniversary of normalized relations between the U.S and Vietnam. The San Francisco-Ho Chi Minh Sister City was founded by then San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan and Chairman Truong Tan Sang of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. Mr. Sang is now a member of the Politburo and Permanent Member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee. Many of our friends from Vietnam who were involved with the sister city effort have ascended to national posts in their respective positions.
San Francisco played a significant role in the early development of relations between the U.S and Vietnam by leading numerous early trade delegations, educational and humanitarian exchanges and being the host city for VietExpo 1994, the first Vietnamese conference and exhibition in the U.S. The friendship and goodwill has continued over the years. San Francisco has completed over 60 goodwill projects and is developing new initiatives of spirit and cooperation. In celebration of 15 years, we are sponsoring the U.S U-20 Men’s national team to go to Vietnam. U.S U-20 will play against Vietnam U-20, ACB Ha Noi and HCMC All Stars Team, organized by the Vietnam Football Federation. For the first time in history, a U.S. national soccer team will play in Vietnam. These historic friendship games reflect today’s changing world, Vietnam’s new spirit and energy, and the common bond created by the sport of soccer. The San Francisco-Ho Chi Minh Sister City is a 501c(3) non-profit charitable organization. All contributions are tax-exempt.
